Apocalyptic sci-fi depicts a gloomy and harsh scenario for life on Earth. Breached floodgates, scorched landscapes, forests turned to deserts. If you’ve ever watched Tank Girl you know what I’m getting at. But what if there was a way we could keep the vibrant and lush oases we’ve come to love, along with our thriving and complex metropolises? That’s the question some scientists are trying to tackle with “geoengineering”.
In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson’s Scientific Advisory Committee was tasked with reporting on the effects of pollution and the state of the Earth’s climate. This was the first time geoengineering was considered a way to combat climate change.
